Parliament Approves Amendment to De-Classify NPOs as Accountable Persons

Overview

This press statement announces a landmark legislative achievement where the Parliament of Uganda approved an amendment to remove Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Churches, and other Non-Profit Organizations (NPOs) from the list of accountable persons under the Anti-Money Laundering Act.

This significant development, resulting from years of collective advocacy, acknowledges the crucial role NPOs play in national development while reducing excessive regulatory burden on the sector.

The amendment marks a transition to a more risk-based approach in addressing terrorism financing concerns related to NPOs, allowing government resources to be focused more effectively on specific organizations that may be at genuine risk.
